Mukono Chief Magistrate Hatanga Juliet Haddy has issued warrants of arrest for Uganda’s Ambassador to Burundi, Gen. Matayo Kayligonza and two of his body guards who are accused of assaulting a female traffic police officer Sgt. Esther Namganda.
The warrants followed the failure of the suspects to appear in court for mentioning of the case. In the warrants that were signed yesterday, magistrate Hatanga ordered for the arrest of Gen. Kyaligonza, 73, Lance corporal Peter Bushenbich, 30 and Pte. John Robert Okurut be brought to court.
The suspects’ faces charges of causing bodily harm and assault, contrary to sec.263 of the penal code act. Gen. Kyaligonza and his body guards assaulted and injured Sgt. Esther Namaganda on 24th February who was on duty.
An incident which was also captured on video, when the driver of motor vehicle reg.n. 18CDMI heading from Kampala- Mukono wrongfully made a U-Turn in the middle of the road at the Seeta Junction and was stopped by the traffic officer which prompted the body guards and their boss to angrily assault and cofront the officer on why she attempted to stop the from making a U-turn.
However following the incident in which a journalist was also assaulted the two body guards were arrested and paraded before an internal UPDF Disciplinary court. Through their lawyers the suspects protested appearing before two different tribunals for the same case hence skipping the mukono court which prompted the Mukono magistrate to issue warrants of arrest.
