Local Council chairpersons at both parish and village levels have tasked KCCA to increase their pay from 120,000 annually to 4millionshillings per month for the work and services they offer.
Their demand was made while meeting the Minister for Kampala Beti Olive Kamya, According to the Chairperson LC II Nakasero Parish, Nasul Habib Rwamagana, the local chairpersons at village and parish level are under paid compared to KCCA councilors yet they work 24 hours without rest.
“Parliament recommended that we should be given a monthly payment of Shs 10,000 but this money is so little and since we started work we have not received the money,” said Rwamagana.
Rwamagama argued that if KCCA councilor who just sit in meetings are paid Shs 3 million per month then LC I chairpersons deserve more for the work they do.
Asked why they were asking for a monthly salary yet the state of security in their areas is in a bad shape, the LCs blamed security operatives for failing to work closely with them who are well conversant with the residents.
Kamya, the minister for Kampala said she will look at the demands and find a way forward.
“I have looked through your petition read by Rwamagana and I have heard every issue that you have put across. I promise to share it with other government sectors concerned,” Kamya said.
In the same meeting, Kamya disclosed a plan to register all residents of Kampala an aim of knowing the exact number for better service delivery and security.
