One of the key proponents of the presidential age limit removal and Kassanda South MP, Hon. Simeo Nsubuga, is now crying foul saying that his party, NRM, is trating him unfairly. He has in a surprising twist of events come out to criticise the NRM and cast doubt on its chances of winning the 2021 general.
Simeo was addressing a meeting with his constituents over the weekend, where he attacked Florence Kiconco, a presidential aide on legal affairs, for leading the eviction of his constituents. The motor mouthed politician had no kind words for his party saying that evicting his people was not the best way NRM should repay his loyalty.
“I have stood with NRM at a time when no one wanted to be associated with NRM, I have sacrificed so much for the sake of NRM, I defended the party when no one could, but is this what they are paying me?” an agitated Simeo said.
Last week, over 200 homes in Bukoba, Kika, Kassawo, Kabalagala, Lwamasanga, Bukompe and Kanyogoga villages in Nalutuntu sub-county, Kassanda district were allegedly razed by alleged agents of Abid Alam, a businessman and proprietor of Mityana Farm Enterprises and Lake Wamala Farm Ltd.
Alam is said to be working with the NRM chairman for Kiganda sub-county Hussein Kavuma to evict people despite express directives to the contrary from the Justice Catherine Bamugemereire-led commission of inquiry into land matters. The order was issued on April 30, 2019 to Kassanda district police commander.
This directive came a year after the commission had issued an earlier order to Alam and his agents to desist from carrying out any evictions, meting out acts of violence against locals, restricting their movements, imposition of illegal curfews, deployment of private security guards, survey, sale or transfer of any of the disputed land as well as clearing more land for cultivation.
Simeo Nsubuga, a former Uganda Police Force spokesperson, rose to fame over his lopsided responses while still with the Uganda Police. It was not surprising when he quit the Police to join politics on the NRM ticket. He quickly made it to the hate list when he championed Raphael Magyezi’s bill that led to the scrapping of the presidential age limit from the constitution. He was publicly attacked in 2017 in Mubende during the 24th coronation anniversary of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi by William Ntege aka Kyuma Kya Yesu for his role in promoting the controversial amendment. Following this attack, Simeo was given bodyguards from the presidential police guard. He recently championed the endorsement by Buganda region NRM MPs of Museveni as the sole NRM candidate for 2021.
Now, Simeo believes that having put his life on the line and worked tirelessly to see that the president maintains his stranglehold on to power, the party should be treating him like a hero and not undermining his political efforts. He also believes that he is vulnerable, seeing that all his neighbouring constituencies have been swallowed by People Power yet they were NRM strongholds. He said that all MPs in the area except Zaake were NRM in 2016 but they have since denounced NRM and joined People Power
“In Kassanda North, Patrick Nsamba Oshabe is the People Power coordinator for greater Mubende. His deputy is David Kalwanga whose constituency, Busujju, borders mine to the south. East of my constituency is Mityana Municipality represented by Francis Zaake who is Bobi Wine’s deputy. To the west is Kasambya represented by Gaffa Mbwatekamwa, also a people power coordinator,” Nsubuga said.
Simeo now joins Evelyn Anite on the growing list of the promoters of the poisoned age limit removal, who have since fallen out of favour within the NRM party.
