Tragedy struck yesterday as an ambulance for Kisoro hospital was involved in an accident as it rushed patients to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
The Ambulance skidded off the road and overturned into a roadside drainage channel just after Karengyere in Rubanda district.
Luckily, all six inhabitants escaped with no serious or fatal injuries save for emotional and traumatic stress.
Access to health services and quality specialized health care continues to be a nightmare across the country. As such, hospitals without inadequate facilities and services are faced with a dilemma where they have to keep transferring patients to the closest hospital with specialized care.
In this particular incidence, the Ambulance had to speed from Kisoro to Mbarara over a very long distance in order to get a patient to good health care. It is little wonder that such drivers under pressure find themselves driving dangerously in order to beat time and save lives.
Health facilities and services in our capital city leave a lot to be desired. One can imagine what the plight of those who are hundreds of kilometers away from the center are faced with.
