In yet another incidence of insecurity in the country, Mbale District Woman Member of Parliament (MP), Mbale District Connie Nakayenze Galiwango is on tenterhooks. She is crying out for more security after unidentified people dropped a letter at her home, demanding Shs400 million ransom lest they kill her.
The authors, who identify themselves as Ms Nakayenze’s colleagues of Mbale Secondary School of 2009-2012, order her to raise Shs 400million and send it to 0780723011. The number is registered in the name of Moses Namisi. The letter was reportedly picked by one of Ms Nakayenze’s daughters last week from her home in Butaleja cell, Masaba ward, Industrial division, Mbale Municipality. Ms Nakayenze was not at home when the incident happened.
The letter currently in police custody at Mbale Central Police Station reads in part; “Dear honourable Connie, we have been sent to clear you within this week unless you raise four hundred million on this number, 0780723011, N.M.” Ms Galiwango’s daughter, who picked the letter, has already recorded a statement with police.
The Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, Mr Robert Tukei confirmed the developments and said police is in possession of the letter. Police has so far arrested Moses Namisi to help with the ongoing investigations.
Ms Nakayenze has been crying out over threats on her life, which she says started after she voted against the removal of the presidential age limit in Parliament last year, contrary to her party position. She says that unknown people have been trailing her since then and she has asked police for security but all in vain.
Ms. Nakayenze is one of the NRM MPs who voted against the removal of presidential age limit, something that irked many of her NRM colleagues.
