The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF)spokesperson, Brigadier Richard Karemire, has come out to explain why the security agencies brutally re-arrested suspects who had been released on bail by court. The suspects, accused of allegedly murdering former police spokesperson Andrew Kaweesi, had been released on bail before the security agencies swung into action and re-arrested them together with their lawyer.
Karemire has said that the suspects were picked up by joint security forces and are locked up at a gazetted facility on allegations that they are peace violators. “Our people deserve peace and security forces will do whatever they can within the laws established to ensure that,” said Karemire. He, however, declined to divulge details on where the suspects are being held.
The four suspects are Yusuf Nyanzi, Jibril Kalyango, Joshua Kyambadde and Yusuf Mugerwa, together with their lawyers, Mr James Mubiru. The four were part of a group of eight suspects charged with the murder of the former police spokesperson. They had been granted bail by Lady Justice Lydia Mugambe in March.
In a bizarre scene, the security operatives, using a van with private number plates blocked the court exit and pounced on the Toyota Noah vehicle in which the suspects were, forced it open while brandishing heavy guns. They then grabbed all the occupants, stuffed them into a waiting van and sped off.
