Over five people sustained injuries and were rushed to different clinics on Sunday evening following an explosion at Marco Gym and Spa next to Quality Supermarket along the Naalya-Namugongo Road.
According to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesman, the victims were employees of the Spa adding that they had sustained minor injuries.
He also revealed that Preliminary investigations by Police into the matter show that the explosion was caused by the steam bath boiler resulting from excessive heating. It is suspected that the control valve in the boiler could have been faulty. The gas escaped from the sealed metallic container causing a mechanical explosion, which damaged houses within the vicinity. The victims were evacuated and the scene of crime cordoned off.
The Manager of Marco Gym and Spa only identified as Mercy noted that the Spa had no customers present at the time of the explosion.
According to eyewitnesses, Paul Tumusiime a security guard at on of the neighbouring premises, he there was a shaking equivalent to an earthquake before the actual explosion that lasted some minutes.
“It was like an earthquake and afterward it exploded like a bomb. In the next few minutes people hurried to get out of all the neighbouring buildings,” he said, adding that: “Those who were in the affected building also ran for their dear lives as many were shouting, causing a scene, which paralyzed traffic on the already jammed road.”
Police have since arrested the owner of Marcos Gym and Spa on charges of rush and negligence after a bath steam boiler exploded causing damage on the three storeyed building in Kyaliwajala on Naalya-Namugongo Road, Kira Municipality in Wakiso District adding that the Owner neglected her duties of ensuring that the machine meets health standards.
A similar incident happened in Ntinda around 2011 when a gas cylinder exploded leaving over eight People with serious injuries.
