Leaders hailing from Kisoro district have appealed to the government to defend their son, Gen. Kale Kayihura from the sanctions brought against him by the USA and a looming date with the International Criminal Court, ICC. The USA last week sanctioned Kale Kayihura and also banned him from travelling to the USA over allegations of corruption and abuse of human rights.
Led by the LC5 Chairman Abel Bizimana, the leaders said that Gen. Kayihura performed exceedingly well while serving as IGP and that all that he did was for the good of the ruling government and that is why he was always praised as a good cadre besides being promoted from one rank to another.
They asked the government to write to the US government defending Kayihura on grounds that he was serving its interests in keeping law and order in the country.
Reputed NRM critic, Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda also weighed in saying that it was sad that the NRM government had not come up to defend former IGP at a time the international community is labelling him a criminal.
“The government of Uganda should be responsible for all the actions of Kale Kayihura at the time he served as the Inspector General of Police. I sympathize with the people of Kisoro whose son is not being protected by the government he served diligently as nobody accused him of any wrong doing in line with torture of suspects, ” Fr Batanyenda said.
Kayihura hails from the border district of Kisoro.
