City tycoon and businessman Drake Lubega was sent to Luzira maximum prison after he pleaded guilty in court for the illegal manufacture of polythene bags that did not meet Uganda National Bureau of Standards guidelines.
Drake Lubega was appearing before the Standards, Utilities and Wildlife Court on Buganda Road that was presided over by Marion Mangeni.
The Ugandan National Bureau of Standards accused Lubega of manufacturing illegal plastic bags contrary to market regulations and going ahead to brand them with the UNBS seal or logo to imply that they met standards. This action in itself put Lubega in trouble.
Drake Lubega pleaded guilty to manufacturing plastic bags or kaveera that do not meet the 30 microns requirement as mandated by the law.
He was ordered to pay a fine of Sixty Million (60) Million shillings. Lubega is further required to pay an extra Two million, six hundred thousand shillings (2,600,000shs) to UNBS to facilitate the destruction of 196 cartons of the said illegal plastic bags.
Lubega Drake is one of the many victims of recent operations and a crackdown by the Standards body UNBS which has embarked on a series of enforcement operations to bring to book those on the wrong side of the law.
