Uganda’s hopes for more medals at the IAAF world championships in Doha were dealt a massive blow after medal hopefuls, Stephen Kiprotich and Fred Musobo performed dismally in the marathon event, finishing outside the medal bracket.
Lelisa Desisa gave Ethiopia its first world marathon title since 2001 on Sunday winning in a time of 2hrs 10min 40sec. The 29-year-old led home an Ethiopian 1-2 — Mosinet Geremew (2hr 10min 44sec) taking silver and Kenya’s Amos Kipruto was third (2hr 10min 51sec).
Uganda’s best performance was by Fred Musobo who finished 13th, while 2013 marathon champion Kiprotich finished a distant 18th.
Uganda’s final hopes for medals now lie in Joshua Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo and Abdallah Kibet who are taking part in the 10,000m finals.
Uganda has so far won only one medal, a gold medal by Halima Nakaayi in the 800m race.
