Police have launched a manhunt for a civil engineer who was supervising the construction of a three-storeyed school building that collapsed on Wednesday.
The School building was being constructed at Harm Junior School at Kalagala in Mpigi Town Council, only for it to collapse during a heavy downpour and it is believed that during the time of collapse, close to 30 Casual workers were on site.
According to Mr. Joseph Turya, the Katonga Regional Police Spokesman, he said that they were yet to get excavators to dig through the debris and establish whether no people are trapped underneath.
There is suspicion that some workers who were onsite could be trapped in the debris.
“I suspect some workers could have been buried in that debris. They were many on the site, but we saw only three running away,” Mr. Moses Ssebwato, a resident of Kalagala Trading Centre, said.
However, Police preliminary investigations indicate that the site engineer and casual workers may have run away after realizing that the building was about to collapse adding that some workers told police that a few days before the incident, the site engineer had barred them from entering the building.
A few metres away from the collapsed building stands a new building which, however, is not yet occupied and Police has vowed that should the same buildings be supervised by the runaway engineer, Police will be left with no option but to seal them off for the safety of the Students.
