Police in Kisoro is detaining Munyaribanje Richard, a 30 year old resident of Bunagana T/Council. Richard was allegedly found in possession of Elephant Ivory weighing about 43kgs.
The suspect was arrested yesterday following a tip off from a concerned citizen in Bunagana town council. He remains in custody amid pending investigations into how he possibly acquired the wildlife product.
In the year 1989, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) banned trade in ivory and other elephant products following the massive extinction of elephants on the African continent. The international laws prohibit the sale and trade of ivory. Penalties for indulging in the illegality are heavy with those found guilty sentenced to nearly 30 years.
