Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has paid an impromptu visit to the grief stricken people of Ssembule, Kabowa Parish in Lubaga Division who lost a resident at the hands of a police officer during a community demonstration.
Kibuuka David, a community worker and local secretary for information, happened to have been among the protestors against the blocking of a community road, Kerezia lane and the nearby swamp by Shreeji Statoners 2009.
Justus Moses, the OC of Kironde Police Post, who commanded the riot police, aimed at the unfortunate young man and shot him direct in the face and died on spot.
“When I subsequently visited the scene, police again lobbed teargas canisters at the grieving residents and caused a stampede amongst the mourners,” Lukwago said.
He added: “This kind of recklessness and highhandedness should be condemned by all right thinking Ugandans.”
Justus the OC of Kabowa was arrested and is being detained at Old Kampala Police Post for shooting a civilian protestor dead.
Police has for long been accused of excessively using its powers to torment citizens. The recent developments to corroborate the accusations are the Makerere University students strike which was highhandedly quashed alongside crackdowns on journalists and former FDC presidential candidate, Dr. Besigye at Kireka.
