Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu came out on Wednesday 19th Feb saying that people who cry of poverty should be arrested.
He said this when speaking to the people in Teso region during the belated National Resistance Movement anniversary in Kamuda sub-county, Soroti District on Wednesday 19th Feb 2020.
He said that he is tired of people who cry of poverty and have made it their daily topic of discussion, arguing that such people should be arrested.
He went ahead to say that there is no reason for anyone in Teso region to cry and speak about poverty stressing that the region has immense opportunities like fertile soils that can improve their lives, saying that people in Teso region have failed to realize their potential to alleviate poverty.
He advised the Teso people to shun politics since it is one of the reasons why they have remained poor.
Teso region is among the top five sub region regions in Uganda with high poverty levels where over 40 per cent of the population lives below the poverty line, according to the 2016/17 Uganda National Household Survey.
Gen. Peter Elwelu has been occasionally giving queer advice to poor people in Uganda. One time he told the youths to go and sell cow dung as one of the ways of making money. He said this while addressing a congregation in one of the churches in Mukono.
