Makerere University has innovated an Ebola diagnostic testing device.
The diagnostic device will be used to test the disease among Ugandans in case of an Ebola outbreak.
Uganda is famous for putting up a strong fight against Ebola since Last year the Government managed to combat it in less than three months.
Speaking at a press briefing in regard to the forthcoming World Health Summit, the Principal Makerere College of Natural Sciences revealed that Ebola testing Kit had been innovated adding that the kit only uses blood and in very few minutes the medical person is able to know the status of any person.
“Initially, the government has been taking samples of Ebola to the Uganda Virus Research Institute, which could also sometimes take them outside the country for testing. This could take a couple of weeks before results come out,” Prof Ibingira said.
“But with the new kit, one will be able to know if he or she is positive instantly and we hope that this will save lives and reduce on the spread of the disease,” he added.
Despite the new kit being very effective, Prof. Ibingira revealed that a financial implication of mass production had been submitted to Government since the University needs Shs. 367b for the mass production of this newly innovated kit.
The Professor says that should the government accept to fund the project by 2021, the plant will be up as soon as possible and production will start adding that they already have the patent rights that give them sole ownership of the idea.
