Mulago hospital which now harbours the biggest faction of diaspora returnees awaiting COVID-19 tests has sounded an alarm to the government to avail more protective face masks.
Mulago came up with the plea following reports in different countries like Spain and Italy where health experts are also contracting the deadly virus due to having contact with the infected patients. In Spain, 15% of the infections are attributed to 9,444 health workers who tested positive. With such cases, Mulago hospital has appealed to government to allocate a weekly shs 9m fund for just face masks where every health expert will be entitled to a couple of masks in a week. The appeal was made by the Mulago health director, Dr. Baterana Byarugaba following a visit by the parliamentary health committee which was supervising the works yesterday, Friday 27 March. “We don’t want our doctors to contract the deadly virus. We pray government works on protective gear as much as they can,” Dr. Byarugaba told the press.
On Tuesday, Uganda like the rest of the world received a consignment from Chinese Chinese billionaire, Jack Ma of the Alibaba group. The consignment contained face masks and other protective equipment. However, the same equipment has been mentioned to be of poor quality. In Czech Republic, health experts said that 80% of these Chinese kits are giving false results. A similar assertion is outstanding in Spain.
