President Yoweri Museveni has issued a stern warning to drunkards asking them to desist from any temptation to drink hand sanitisers as alcohol.
Addressing the nation on Tuesday, March 31, the 75-year-old president warned Ugandans that drinking the over 60% alcohol content in sanitisers would amount to committing suicide as it kills easily.
“You saw what happened with sanitisers. Ugandans are now making sanitisers. Do not drink the sanitisers because they are 60% alcohol, they will kill you,” he said. Sanitisers are made out of detergents and disinfectants that are alcohol based and its used to remove dirt, dissolve grease and reduce bacteria to a safe level.
Museveni attributed this temptation to the large scale manufacture of hand sanitisers with some Ugandans getting tempted to drink it due to its high alcohol content.
It is important to note that Gov’t had issued a tax incentive to spirits and alcohol producers to have at least 7.3 million litres of ethanol for conversion into hand sanitisers.
Sanitiser are very practical, however, the detergent in them is greatly diluted and is, therefore, only effective on surfaces that are not very dirty. hand sanitisers are used to kill germs and viruses on the hands.
