Parliament has grilled Mineral Development minister, Sarah Opendi for helping her lover, a fellow legislator skip the quarantine procedure at the airport.
Reports say that about a fortnight back before the country registered a single case, Opendi led her motorcade to Entebbe airport to fetch Bukonzo West MP, Katusabe Godfrey Atknins from the health experts deployed at the airport to monitor all returnees. One of the airport staff who spoke to this site under an undisclosed identity reveals that Opendi used her position to help her lover skip the entire procedure. Part of her heavily armed security detail intimidated the airport authorities and they succumbed to her orders. “She was quarrelsome, saying all sorts of threatening words pledging to strip us of our jobs,” says the source. “She even claimed how she was to call at State House and have us sacked immediately,” the source further adds.
In the Wednesday plenary, fellow parliamentarians reported Opendi to the speaker and asked for her exit from the chambers. The fury fledged legislators accused her of aiding the escape of her lover from Entebbe quarantine points. Some MPs even revealed how Opendi had been stopped from attending cabinet meetings over the same as the president directed for her isolation. “She was chased from cabinet, what does she want in parliament?,” questioned the MPs.
A physically defeated Opendi nearly burst into tears as she cursed her fellow legislators as she claimed they are making fun of the situation. “Yes, I picked my husband but I never acted with my authority. We followed procedure,” Opendi sobbed. “We have already spent 14 days in self isolation and our tested results have proved us negative,” she begged. The atmosphere turned rowdy and a defeated Opendi pledged to pen in her resignation if any legislator could adduce evidence showing she helped her lover to evade quarantine. “I vow to resign if any MP proves me guilty. I will resign my ministerial position,” Opendi cried.
It should be noted that right from the declaration of the first Corona case in Uganda, the state health minister, Sarah Opendi was quietly hiding in isolation with her Kasese lover, Katusabe Katusabe Godfrey. Her self isolation followed the presidential directive asking her never to get close to state house or any cabinet meetings. James Kakooza, another MP who had a trip from South Africa was mentioned for isolation though he claims to have left around 15, March before the crisis worsened.
