The name Sakwa has been sounding and embroiled in a span of scandals mentioned in the press. From engaging in conflicts with Jinja politicians to land grabbing scandals, Sakwa has been regular.
Formerly an ardent supporter of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party before he was bribed by the NRM, Sakwa was renowned as a man who always never succumbed to anything regardless of the outcome. Peers who identified with him in the past say, Sakwa was a regime critic, a factor that inspired Museveni to tame him with offers. After the 2016 general elections, a financially crippled Sakwa was introduced to the NRM by one of his closest friends and a political demagogue in the Busoga region. Sakwa was taken to State House Entebbe where he denounced his affiliation to the UPC and got baptized as an NRM cadre. With juicy offers like the position of the RDC in a district of his choice, a decent residence, a ride and armed escorts, Sakwa sold his conscience to Museveni.
They say once a person crosses from the opposition to the ruling NRM government, they tend to be a problem to their old comrades. This has manifested in other politicians like Betty Kamya, who persistently stings the FDC where she started her political career. Back to Sakwa, he has crossed the line for quite long due to his endless operations targeting district opposition leaders. Sakwa is a pronounced hater of the People Power movement who even took an oath before Museveni in their last security meeting targeting people putting on red berets.
In this very year, about a month back, Sakwa stormed paradise hotel in Jinja town in pursuit for the FDC strongman, Rtd.col.Dr Kizza Besigye. He turned the hotel upside down in an exaggerated operation manned by heavily armed officers of the UPDF and police. Besigye was scooped out and his car was towed to Nalufenya where he was detained before being released the next day and asked never to lay foot in Jinja. “Whenever Besigye visits Jinja, he causes chaos and we don’t want that in Jinja,” Sakwa told journalists when asked why he arrested the four time presidential candidate. Sakwa later dramatically declared Besigye an ‘unwanted desert locust’ that is condemned from Jinja for good.
Just a month after Besigye’s ban from Jinja, the same Sakwa used the COVID-19 directives to target Jinja locals. He would be seen donned in an LDU uniform with a whip tightly gripped in his hands. The same RDC was quoted by our reporter saying, “Ugandans understand when beaten” reason he believes in aggression as opposed to diplomacy. His April 4, raid on People Power’s Pastor Muwanguzi has received widespread condemnation. It has showed him as a man who is ready to kill just to appease his boss, Museveni. Sakwa brutalised Pastor Muwanguzi over a mere disagreement they had on Baba FM, a local radio station in Jinja. It is said he pulled out his pistol to shoot at the pastor before the radio staff intervened and stopped him. He would later harbour the grudge and institute the revenge on that very night of April, 4.
