Controversial cleric, Rev. Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda has hit hard at selfish Ugandan elite and politicians who are turning a blind eye to the needy in this Corona holiday period.
The cleric relates other neighbouring countries like Kenya, Rwanda, Ghana and the likes where the downtrodden are being remembered by those who hold authority. Kenya and Rwanda have for instance deducted salaries of top government officials in a bid to support the fight against COVID-19. Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy, William Ruto committed up to 80% of their pay while other ministers will receive up to 40% of their salaries. In Rwanda, government officials led by president Paul Kagame have committed huge portions of their pay.
Domestically in Uganda, when the Nakaseke MP, Luttamaguzi Ssemakula proposed a shs 2m monthly deduction from the salaries of each MP, the Mukono municipality legislator, Betty Nambooze was the first to reject the idea, saying it is just camera politics at play. It is against this background that Fr. Gaetano believes Ugandans are being betrayed by their so called leaders. Below is his Facebook post;
Fr. Gaetano’s post
Politics aside, In most other countries including the neighbors Kenya,Malawi, Tanzania and Rwanda, the Mps and ministers have willingly sacrificed in kindness full or part of their salary (temporary) to the government to help the people who are stuck in their homes with no food, no rent funds, no electricity funds, etc
Other leaders and football players have willingly sacrificed a huge salary and wage cut to fight the corona virus war together.
Our Ugandan Mps and ministers, we know its a general problem but what have you sacrificed willingly? or you are still busy discussing bill boards,stickers and a share on COVID-19 money???
