A fresh row between Uganda Law Society and renowned city lawyer, Isaac Ssemakadde has erupted after the duo disagreed with how the body has handled Zaake’s situation.
Counsel Ssemakadde scoffed at the Simon Peter Kinobe, the ULS president for staying mute when the judiciary is under attack and being used as a stage of the state’s political fights. Ssemakadde attributes the body’s silence on the president who he labelled a ‘lame duck’ whose tenure ended on April, 4 2020. Ssemakadde says Mr. Kibobe is silent about human rights degradation because he is eyeing a constituency in Bunyoro under the NRM ticket. “What would you expect of a man chasing after a meal ticket from the dictator?,” Ssemakadde told Ekyooto on phone. “His time as a lawyer is over because he’s played state arm in the law society. His career survival is in tatters,” he adds.
Ssemakadde took the battle to Twitter where he grilled the high court judge, Jane Frances Abodo for sanctioning Zaake’s case when its legitimacy is itself a subject of debate. Numerous lawyers argue that whatever Mr. Museveni is doing regarding prosecutions related to COVID-19 are all illegalities that violate the supremacy of the 1995 Uganda constitution. Ssemakadde’s tweet expressed disgust with the torture inflicted on the Mityana MP, Zaake Francis. “UPDATE: If you’d thought that “Justice” J F Abodo would he more sensible & impartial than @ODPPUGANDA predecessors, think again. She’s just another rotten tomato. The only difference being that has a vagina & comes from Karamoja. JUST ANOTHER PUPPET!
#Omwavu Wakuffa,” reads the tweet. On the same tweet, Ssemakadde captions an image of Zaake’s charge sheet showing the trumped cases.
“The tweet was scientifically calibratied to be highly scintillating so as to blow off the heads which have always been empty, leaving the most sensible and impartial to remain focused on fundamental issues raised and explain to the legally bankrupt population,” says a source in the ULS who spoke under anonymity for fear of reprisals.
His tweet prompted Mr. Kinobe to issue a condemnation statement dated 29, April. “The legal profession is a noble one where such language is not permissible and may amount to professional misconduct,” reads part of the statement. “We urge and hope that Counsel Ssemakadde shall immediately bring down the impugned post,” cautions another part. In a rejoinder, an unapologetic Ssemakadde responded to the ULS in a rather radical way where he says, “#SPKinobe2018, whose term of office expired on 4 April, is free to voice opinion in favour of those in power disguised as the collective thinking of @ug_lawsociety. I am also free to voice opinion that shocks, disturbs and offends those in power.”
Counsel Ssemakadde is the ‘Centre for Legal Aid’ proprietor famed for his remarkable efforts in the 2017 and 2018 Stella Nyanzi cyber cases which earned him an alias ‘Nyanzi’s lawyer’. The other victories works include high profile cases like the recent Basajjabalaba shs 170b refund case, Sudhir Vs. Bank of Uganda among others.
In the entirety of his legal career, Ssemakadde is a widely celebrated opposition sympathiser and human rights crusader which is why he has on several instances offered pro Borno legal services to activists like the faded ‘Jobless Brotherhood’. He has also featured in the Makerere University cases of both students and staff.
