Speaker Rebecca Kadaga has today expressed concern over the health of Mityana Municipality MP, Francis Zaake noting that he was beaten and battered by the Uganda Police. “I’m saddened to hear about acts of torture that continue to be meted on some Ugandans; it’s sad that this was reportedly inflicted upon an MP,” she said.

“l’m very concerned about his situation. It is clear that he was beaten and battered. Hon. Zaake told me that pepper spray was sprayed directly into his eyes. He was in police custody for several days and they must account for his injuries. This is a violation of human rights and it is unacceptable.” she added.

Kadaga also directed the Minister of Internal Affairs to explain to the House and the country, the situation of Zaake and to take action against perpetrators of torture of the honourable Member of Parliament and other Ugandans. “By Thursday, we expect a reply from the Minister of Internal Affairs; to explain to us what happened to Hon. Zaake and what he is going to do to the perpetrators,” she said.

Police arrested Zaake last month for allegedly distributing food to the electorate in his constituency, Mityana Municipality, an exercise Police says attracted crowds and went against the Presidential directive of fighting Coronovirus.
