The four time FDC presidential candidate, Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye has urged Ugandans to block all transit trucks from inland roads as a means of averting the spread of the novel Corona virus disease.
The opposition leader made the remarks today while appearing on NBS Television ‘Morning Breeze’ show. According to Dr. Besigye, it is unfair for Ugandans to take heed to all health standard operating procedures at the expense of halting their private businesses yet truck drivers are freely allowed space to operate. “If government doesn’t do enough to check drivers, we shall talk to our people to block all trucks on our roads,” Besigye said.
Besigye’s urge comes at a time when all the latest COVID-19 cases are for truck drivers from neighbouring Kenya and Tanzania. Of the 98 confirmed positive cases, 29 are truck drivers according to the statistics by the Health Ministry. Our private survey reveals that the transit truck business belongs to most of the top government officials who do not want their profiteering to hit a snag.
Asked why his ‘People’s Government’ has not followed the trails of other opposition parties to donate to the COVID-19 taskforce, Besigye said he cannot even make such a mistake. “I will not donate to things I don’t trust. We should have a legal and institutional framework everyone trusts and relates to. Ugandans are very generous people except that they have nothing to give. What you’re seeing now as giving must be questioned. A lot of it is some form of corruption, they are buying favour,” he says. “Mr. Museveni is using COVID-19 to exercise absolute power. He has no institutional framework. He only wakes up to issue decrees, that’s the reasons you hear everyone say according to presidential directives,” he adds.
