Gen. Tumukunde, a descendant of Western Uganda was three days back released from Luzira prison where he’s been for 60 days on a pending treason trial. The former Bush war General returned untouched while Zaake, a youthful politician hailing from central Uganda was battered to comma point in state custody following an implication in food distribution to his starving constituents, writes our reporter.
Whereas a spring balance between the cases of the two would outweigh the treason case as being more capital and would even lead to the death penalty if one is convicted, it turns out ironical in today’s Uganda that Zaake’s light case nearly cost him his own life. Referring to Zaake’s post-release statement regarding his arrest, he directly links the torture to his tribal affiliation. The youthful 29 year old Mityana legislator accuses a one Hamudan Twesigye (high ranking security official) of having made tribal remarks as he meted out violence on him. He often labelled Zaake as a ‘Muganda dog’ that could not liberate the country from Museveni and his family. “They always told me to quit politics and leave the country to be governed by Museveni and his family. They claimed Uganda is a private property of Museveni and his family,” the legislator intimidated in an exclusive with Ekyooto. “They arranged a phone talk for me and Mr. Museveni. One of my captors spoke to my wife in Runyankore and asked her why she was married to a ‘Muganda dog’. He shamelessly told her he could aid her access to State house for talks with the president,” he adds. The most recent state orchestrated murders claimed the lives of Ritah Nabukenya and Dan Kyeyune who also hail from the Central region and were directly affiliated to the People Power movement which the state perceives to be a protagonist of the Museveni rule.
All these erratic acts are reminiscent of the Idi Amin times where a genocide was launched and led to the murder of thousands of Acholi and Langi families. Amin used his kinsmen of the Kakwa tribe in the West Nile district of Nebbi. Just like Amin, Museveni uses his tribesmen to execute terror on Ugandan politicians from other regions.
The impending Ugandan reign of terror is less pronounced due to the smart concealment of sensitive information from hitting the media spotlight. Museveni’s army has been built in a hierarchical manner where the high ranking commanders are from his own tribe and region. The Deputy IGP Sabiiti Muzeyi has overshadowed Ochola who is not of Western origin. The commissioner general of prisons, Johnson Byabashaija is already serving another illegally rewarded term yet the regulations bar him from occupying the office past 60. Awarding such high offices to his tribesmen has aided his tyrannical rule to advance in his desired direction. The telegenic despot seems to have learned from the weaknesses in the armies of the preceding governments. It is of no wonder that the forces can spare treason suspects; Gen. Kale Kayihura and Gen. Henry Tumukunde (Bush war historicals) who come from Museveni’s region and instead find it substantial to torment a one Zaake Francis, a young politician from Buganda.
