After clearly observing the points raised by Bobi Wine in his response letter to the loan, IMF officials have made a u-turn and said they will follow up on the recent disbursement of $491.5m which they gave to the scandal-plagued Yoweri Museveni government.
This follows their acknowledgement of the corruption tendencies shamelessly exhibited by the NRM government. The IMF says they have already mitigated and put in place mechanisms for checks and balances to ensure that Museveni and his money hungry crew do not steal from the loan. The development follows a harsh grill on the loan mongering body by ‘Black Star News’ which demanded for the exact reasons why the aid was sent to the corruption-marred Museveni regime.
“Given the level of the regime corruption, what measures have the IMF put in place to ensure that the funds are not diverted to personal account by Mr. Museveni and his corrupt officials or for unintended purposes such as next year’s presidential elections?,” wrote the Black Star News in their letter addressed to the IMF. The news agency goes ahead to accuse the IMF of funding terror activities meted out on the Ugandan citizenry by their own government. “…how can this not be seen by Ugandans and other global citizens as rewarding, endorsing and legitimising a brutal and corrupt dictatorship,” asked Black Star News.
IMF however concedes and says they will do all in their capacity to ensure that Mr. Museveni and his corrupt government put the funds to the right use. The body says it has already asked the Ugandan authorities to stick in line with the targeted transparency. The IMF has faced widespread ridicule from Ugandan activists who accuse the body of sustaining Museveni’s brutal dictatorship for all this long. Self spoken activists like Nana Mwafrika say this body is directly or indirectly sponsoring the torture in form of grants and loans to the militaristic NRM government. Part of the money has already been dished out to the NRM MPs who will receive about shs 12.8b in total as an appreciation and bribery fee from their party chairman, Museveni in his push to suppress the 2021 elections.
