Emerging reports indicate that a medical worker at Lira regional referral hospital has tested positive for the novel Corona virus disease.
The undisclosed medic reportedly came into contact with one of the positive patients being kept at the facility. A source at the hospital says they apparently don’t have the personal protective equipment and she believes her colleague fell ill because of that.
By the time of filing this report, the medical worker had been reportedly transferred to Entebbe Grade B hospital for proper management.
Our efforts to reach the local hospital authorities led by the District Health Officer, Dr. Buchan Ocen didn’t yield as he didn’t respond to our calls. Also officials in the health ministry declined to comment on the matter.
It should be noted that the health Ministry was allocated chunks of money in the supplementary budget for COVID-19. The money was sufficient enough to allocate each of the medical worker the necessary personal protective gear but surprisingly, many medics are working under unhealthy conditions. Some are already demanding for their unpaid allowances yet the minister, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng assured the public that they would pay them on time. At Jinja referral hospital, medical workers declined to handle covid patients after their shs 80,000 daily allowances was trimmed by the DHO to shs 60,000.
