In strict adherence to the existing Ministry of health guidelines on covid, the Electoral commission has today, Tuesday June 16 unveiled a revised roadmap in which the anticipated scientific election shall operate.
In the press briefing chaired by the Head of the Electoral commission, justice Simon Byabakama at the Headquarters in Nakawa, Kampala the EC has urged all aspirants to embrace the new guidelines if the 2021 general elections are to go as intended. All candidates including the incumbent Yoweri Museveni have been urged to appear with only two people to the nomination centres on the day of picking forms. According to the EC, all presidential hopefuls will pick their nominations on November, 2 and 3.
The new scientific campaigns have been chosen because the EC believes this is the only way social distancing can be maintained. “With strict adherence to the existing SOPs, the EC wants all candidates to Wear face masks. It won’t be business as usual. The commission assumes that political parties and individuals utilise this limited time,” says Byabakama. “We appeal to the media to avail equal opportunities to all the aspirants. The media are expected to play a crucial role to ensure that the SOPs are observed and candidates get equal opportunities,” he adds.
“Parties are advised to strictly follow the guidelines on public meetings as guided by the Ministry of Health,” he warns. “We want to ensure that Ugandans remain safe, healthy and alive. Remember, dead bodies don’t vote,” justice Simon Byabakama added.
Byabakama says covid or no covid, article 61(2) which calls for a general election has to be maintained. “We as stakeholders must uphold the sanctity of this clause. The primary concern for all of us whether parties, security, candidates and so forth is the need to preserve the lives of the people,” he maintained.
