Atleast three people have died as a result of taking excessive alcohol in different parts of Rukungiri district, in a space of one week.
Last week on Monday, Julius Twesigye, 64, a resident of Kamujegye cell in Rwerere Town Council, allegedly took excess alcohol while he had gone to visit a friend and he was announced dead the next day. His body was found lying in a small eucalyptus tree forest, located a few meters away from Mbuyani’s residence.
Another resident Herbert Mugabe, a fishmonger, also passed on after taking alcohol and his body was found in his sitting room. On the same day, Timothy Karenzi 46, was found dead in his bedroom by his colleague and residents attribute these sudden deaths to alcohol and prolonged COVID-19 lockdown. The number of alcohol-related deaths has grown rapidly in recent decades, according to a new analysis of death certificates.
The Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, Elly Maate has said that police has so far arrested three suspects to assist in investigations as inquiries into the matter continue.
