As Ugandans are still jubilant to the temporary withdrawal of the notorious Local Defence Unit which was dumped into the Kimaka training camp, the Chief of Armed Forces, Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has once again unveiled a new Force to ‘tame’ Bobi Wine supporters.
In a high security meeting held on Monday morning at State House Nakasero, Museveni convened Maj. Gen. Sabiiti Mzee, Gen. David Muhoozi and the CMI head, Abel Kandiho to lay a counter-active plan for what they termed as ‘unruly’ Bobi Wine supporters. In the meeting, Museveni cited several scenarios at Radio stations like CBS, Radio Sapientia, Baba FM, NBS Radio and Top TV to mention but a few where masses would convene right of the studios to give Bobi Wine a warm send off. “You are not doing enough work. How do those people get to the studio without your knowledge?,” a source quotes Museveni to have said so. “We need to know if it’s Bobi Wine coordinating those people by himself. I direct you to form a unit to combat this. I didn’t like what I saw in Mpigi. You are making Bobi Wine strong,” Museveni allegedly fumed.
At the end of the meeting at around 11:00hrs, Maj. Gen. Sabiiti recommended the formation of a unit that would take over the operations of the LDU which to-date remains off the streets. “We have to create a Violence Suppression Unit that will handle Bobi Wine,” Maj. Gen. Sabiiti retorted. “We need a Unit that will crush all these people convening outside Radio and TV stations,” he added.
According to the arrangements and how it is conduct its operations, the Violence Suppression Unit (VSU) is to always first notify the media houses before camping outside their premises. It is to also collect information of the politicians who are to take part in political talk shows that occur in curfew hours to avoid inconveniencing them as they did with Nambooze, Chairman Nyanzi and Ssemujju at NBS last month.
