Police in Mbale spent the biggest part of Saturday morning battling Bobi Wine supporters who had gathered at Bugisu Cooperative Union (BCU) Radio in Mbale city. The People Power/NUP party president was to have a morning political talk show on the BCU radio but security led by the RDC, Sulaiman Baraza Ogajjo raided the media premises and urged the station management not to ‘risk’ hosting the presidential hopeful.
In a media statement, the RDC termed Bobi as a peace disruptor who is unwelcome to ‘peaceful’ Mbale. “We don’t have Bobi wine’s program. He should not disturb us. We are very serious on this. People in Mbale are enjoying peace, so they don’t need to be disturbed,” he said to the press.
By Saturday morning, police had heavily deployed across all main streets in Mbale City. Local NUP/ People Power political aspirants who had convened to welcome Bobi were engaged in running battles with police prompting them to fire teargas and live bullets to disperse gathering supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party led by the Kyadondo East Member of Parliament, Mr Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.
The NUP supporters donning in red berets had started gathering outside BCU radio station premises as early as 7am as they chanted People Power slogans. Police was forced to plunge into the crowd and chaotic scenes ensued. In the process, several NUP supporters were arrested and are currently detained at Mbale Central Police Station. A renowned Bobi Wine confidant largely famed as ‘Noah Mutwe’ was also arrested and he us currently detained at Nalufenya police station. The presidential hopeful, Bobi evaded the arrest and he is apparently at his Magere residence according to a statement issued by his Bodyguard, Eddie Mutwe.
