Mukono municipality legislator, Betty Nambooze Bakireke says her decision to join the National Unity Platform party has been influenced by the agreement between The People’s Government and People Power principals.
Nambooze says that The People’s Government, a pressure group led by Dr. Kizza Besigye and People Power, led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine sat and resolved that in case one of the two principals does not appear on the ballot, it will be by default that he would rally behind the other. Addressing journalists yesterday, Nambooze said, “I told my colleagues in the People’s Government and some even insulted me. I told them I will work tooth and nail to see that Dr. Besigye does not appear on the ballot.” She added, “We can’t stand an election where Besigye and Kyagulanyi are on the same ballot. The time has finally come and this is our only chance to take on Mr. Museveni.”
She says in the agreement between Besigye and Bobi, the former will stick to activism while the latter will contest and receive his backing by default. “In their agreement, Besigye agreed to stick to activism and mobilize Ugandans against the regime with support of Bobi,” and that, “Bobi will take on Mr. Museveni on the ballot and be backed by Dr. Besigye.”
With just a fee months left to the general elections, the veteran opposition leader, Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye remains undecided about making a re-run. Sources say he has frequently refused despite being approached by delegates from the FDC party. On the other hand, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, who already announced his presidential bid has continued to receive endorsements from key opposition players.
