Former senior presidential press secretary, Joseph Tamale Mirundi has warned leaders of the National Unity Platform to be keen on the recruitment of the Mukono municipality legislator, Betty Nambooze Bakireke into their party.
Speaking bitterly on the airwaves of Pearl FM 107.9 this morning in Kampala, Mirundu labelled Nambooze as an opportunist seeking to use Bobi’s popularity as a stepping stone to retain her parliamentary seat in Mukono. “Nambooze is not embracing NUP/PP because she has them at heart. She simply wants to secure her victory in the next elections,” Mirundi warns. “That Ssubi parliamentary group is opportunistic. Ssegona, Nambooze, Muwanga Kivumbi and the likes are all eyeing parliament. They have nothing new to offer to Bobi,” Mirundi adds.
The motormouthed analyst predicts that these new converts are likely to defect back to their mother party and await another political wave or face to ride on in 2026. “When the 2021 elections end, they will settle back to DP and wait for another leader to emerge. Nambooze and group in 2016 jumped on Mbabazi after receiving UGX 200 million from him,” Mirundi said.
Earlier this week, the National Unity Platform party headed by presidential hopeful, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu unveiled the entire Democratic Party bloc MPs as new members. The event saw 10 of the 15 MPs defect from Uganda’s oldest political party, leaving it almost with no legislator. Mirundi says, the only way Mao can consolidate the position of DP in the next election is by ensuring he plants a candidate on Nambooze and other defectors. “Mao should play the loser’s game. Let him exert pressure on each of the defectors so we see how they can win again,” Mirundi said.
