Yesterday, the four time presidential candidate, Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye revealed in a heartbreaking address to his supporters that he would not seek re-election in 2021. The revelation left most of the FDC stalwarts in untold tears as many could not believe that at one point, Dr. Besigye would drop off the hook. Besigye’s exit however comes as a blessing in disguise for the new generational wave of the People Power movement led by Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine.

Dr. Besigye opted out of the elections not for his own good but for the best of the struggle. He has perhaps overtime heard the cries of Ugandana who have for the past couple of years urged him to heroically drop the mantle and embrace the new kid on the block, Bobi Wine. Reflecting on Joel Ssenyonyi’s remarks on Besigye’s decision, “he has left a legacy and we now look to him as Mandela of our time,” one ought to believe that Dr. Besigye can now be looked to as a political consultant who can guide other forces of change on the direction they can take.

For all the time he’s contested, Besigye says the last election of his will was that of 2006 which he won and Museveni snatched it away from him and the battle ended in a court petition that he also lost. Dr. Besigye’s strategy and hopes in the ballot shrunk ever since and in fact he too exclaims that he was dragged in the 2011 and 2016 polls. His exit from the 2021 polls will therefore enable him concentrate on the strategy he best understands. To court him in his election withdrawal remarks, Besigye said, “We look for someone to lead the plan A (elections/ballot),” while “I will lead the plan B”.

How Bobi gains

Unlike Amama Mbabazi who miserably lost after a warm reception onto the ballot, Kyagulanyi will now have a fertile ground to lead the opposition struggle. There will be no stiff competition since the opposition doyen, Besigye has now tapped out. What the FDC and opposition parties at large have to do is front a sole candidate and do away with the idea of fronting party candidates into the final race. This discussion can be realised in case errors made by The Democratic Alliance (TDA) are rectified ahead of 2021.
