High court has just given a nullification verdict on the stature of Uganda People’s Congress party president, Jimmy Akena Obote as the president of this party.
In a lengthy petition filed by the Olara Otunnu faction several years back at the peak of UPC wars and party infighting, Akena was being challenged for illegally serving as the party president.
Julius Galisonga, a lawyer who represented the petitioner Prof. Kakonge confirmed that court has indeed dethroned the regime apologist. “Hon. Jimmy Akena’s position as UPC president has been nullified, in a case where Galisonga & Co. Advocates represented the Prof. Kakonge the successful respondent,’ Galisonga writes on Facebook.
It should be noted that in the recent delegates meeting, Jimmy Akena was re-anointed as the party principal without any party contestation. He later announced that he would not participate in the 2021 general elections in the capacity of presidency but instead he had made up his mind to return to the Lira constituency. Sources say Akena is just given a sympathy vote with elders of the Langi clan saying ‘let Obote’s orphan eat’.
UPC Akena side says they are to appeal the ruling. “The UPC president Hon. Jimmy Akena and the cabinet are studying the decision with the intention to appeal to the supreme court,” a statement issued by Andrew Omara reads.
The days of Akena as party president have seen the UPC sign an MoU with the ruling NRM party in which his wife, Betty Amongi was to continue serving in Museveni’s cabinet and that Akena should always be granted an easy victory in his constituency. Otunnu accuses Akena’s side of hobnobbing with the number one enemy (Museveni) of his late father, Obote.
