The stubbornness of Magufuli regarding the COVID-19 contagion is continuing to amuse the world. This follows his defiance he unleashed during a Sunday meeting with the 76 year old Ugandan president, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni with whom he was to hold a meeting regarding the $3.5b oil pipeline project.
Although Museveni appeared compliant to the WHO rules of wearing a face mask, a complacent Magufuli and his security detail declined to wear the shields. The stubborn Tanzanian leader who earlier declared his country covid free was calmly marching without a face mask as he amazingly glared at Museveni who walked on serious with the mask covering his face.
The two leaders signed an oil pipeline agreement which is estimated to cost about $3.5 billion. “Held a meeting today with His Excellency John Pombe Magufuli in Chato, Tanzania where we discussed a number of issues of bilateral interest to our countries,” Museveni writes.
He also opens up on the development regarding the pipeline deal. “In principle, we agreed that our governments expedite the harmonization of pending issues in the spirit of the East African Community (EAC), the remaining agreements be fast-tracked including the Tanzanian HGA and we quickly carry out the implementation of EACOP project,”he adds.
The oil pipeline project is to stretch from the oil rich Bunyoro sub region to the cost of Daresalaam via Tanzania. The amendments follow Museveni’s fall out with his Kenyan counterpart, Uhuru Kenyatta under unclear circumstances which compelled him to choose Tanzania as an alternative route to the sea.
