Speaking at the NTV political programme this Tuesday morning, Rubongoya revealed that the EC and Byabakama are in bondage and cannot expedite any activity independently. “The Electoral Commission is a prisoner itself,” Lewis states. “We took our struggle knowing that’s indeed a struggle, no oppressor gives you freedom on a silver platter. We are willing to go all the way,” he adds.

Lewis further expressed his frustration with the incumbent regime for harbouring too much bias on the NUP. He strains that the NRM colludes with security agents to frustrate NUP activities. “When NRM have their activities, nothing happens to them, but when NUP features anywhere, our people are immediately arrested,” he remarked. He however blames all this frustration on the fact that the NRM regime is in panic. “We are dealing with a dictatorship which knows that they are unpopular si they are trying to frustrate anyone who takes the message of change out there.” He however adds that the oppression is not discriminative but targets the opposition at large. “The government thinks they should stifle all other political parties and make sure they meet a lot of hindrances,” he exclaims.

On why the NUP will not have party primaries, Lewis says the political environment itself is not favourable for a strong opposition establishment like NUP. “It would have been possible for us to organise primaries if only we were in an environment that would allow us to do that. If we could not do consultations,if we cannot appear on a radio unhindered, how would you go on to organise primaries?,” he asks.
