A UPDF chopper is currently pursuing the 50 inmates who have this evening broke into the prisons armoury and fled with a total of 36 guns.
According to credible sources, the inmates overwhelmed the prison security and raided the gun store in a well coordinated escape plan.
Many bullets are overheard rocking the skies of Moroto town as the UPDF gunship chopper pursues the prisoners. The major heavy fighting is in the hills of Mountain Moroto where the inmates have sought refuge. Majority of the escapees are renowned cattle rustlers who are familiar with combatant armed fighting according to reports we are getting.
Sources say the inmates had earlier decried harsh conditions and the mistreatment in the prison cells but to no rescue. The situation worsened when 30 of them reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 and yet they were mixing freely without an isolation unit. This compelled them to initiate a prison break.
The details of the escape are still scanty. We await a formal statement from the Office of the Prisons Public Relations headed by Frank Baine. This is the second time such an incident is happening this year. The previous was in Northern Uganda when inmates escaped from a prison in Arua district.
