The National Unity Platform party president on Wednesday evening scoffed at Uganda’s longest serving despot, Yoweri Museveni who is panickingly intensifying his use of social media channels to relay his political campaiging messages.

Bobi’s lambasting of the despotic ruler, Gen. Museveni comes just after the latter had announced joining the Instagram platform. In a brief tweet, Museveni announced he had officially joined Instagram. “Bazukulu, I am now on Instagram,” tweeted the elderly despot. This declaration implies that the 76 year old ruler is now available on all social media platforms of YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram among others.

Robert Kyagulanyi however says all this is a mockery and outright hypocrisy more so when it is all coming from a leader who has been suppressing people’s rights of expression by imposing obnoxious laws to curtail free speech. “The president recently said his love for social media has seen him win over many supporters who were initially against him. Gen Museveni uses social media every day to post about his cows, communicate his programs and tell more lies,” part of Bobi’s Wednesday post reads.

“I recently met an old man who told me the most defining characteristic of dictators is their inability to feel any sense of shame about anything. They don’t care about flip flopping, they don’t care contradicting themselves in action and word,” another part reads.

In the year 2018 when the People Power movement was just gaining momentum, a biggest section of its supporters were social media based. They routinely made posts critical of Museveni’s dictatorship and misgovernace tendencies till he resolved through the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to regulate social media usage by imposing the Over the Charge Tax (OTT). Despite the creation of this new tax, Ugandans stubbornly switched to the Virtual Private Network (VPN) which made the OTT plans ineffective. The UCC now wants to regulate NUP/PP bloggers with yet another law that takes effect next month, October 5.
