Makerere inferno: Stubborn Nawangwe protests resignation calls

Speaking this morning on pearl FM airwaves, the outspoken political analyst described the inferno as an inside plan. “These are Mafias led by Nawangwe. They don’t want schools to reopen. They are doing this to scare the president,” Mirundi says. “But they are very stupid. A stupid cat will eat a pregnant rat as if it will survive on grass in future,” he adds.

He however cast doubts in the credibility of the investigating team which he says will take for ever to divulge the unknown details of the fire. “The truth will take years to come out. It will be another government that will tell Ugandans who burnt the building,” he prophesies.

Addressing journalists yesterday at the Uganda Media centre, the spokesperson of the CID, ASP Charles Twiine said the investigating team is to publish its report on Wednesday next week. He also said they are studying the CCTV footage where six unidentified top administrators are seen entering the building and do not come out moments later. “We invited colleagues from the Ministry of works, professional engineers and also some university team to investigate and give us their findings as we also do our own,” Twiine said. “We shall make assessments and compare the findings between the different investigating team before we conclude and get the final report,” he adds.

The Makerere University main building valued at UGX 15.7 billion was ravaged by fires which sparked on the midnight of September, 19. Two police guards were arrested in the aftermath of the tragedy to aid investigations. However, a section of Makerere alumni want some university administrators to step down and pave way for transparent investigations.
