The controversial Mukono municipality legislator, Hon. Betty Nambooze Bakireke on Tuesday night at the Barometer extra show left most of her followers amused with how she heaped praises on MPs who have overstayed in parliament.

Barometer extra ratings: Ssegirinya voted man of the match

Nambooze who is seeking a third term says parliament should be looked at as a house that grooms political leaders. She alludes to her benchmarking experience in the UK and Europe where she says legislators who have overstayed in the August house are even rewarded and recognised for being the custodians of parliament.

“The more you stay in parliament, the more one becomes an asset to the people. We have people like Cecilia Ogwal, if she decides to stand and speak, no one will tell her to sit down. In Britain, MPs are graded by seniority, the one that has stayed longer in parliament is awarded a position of father or mother of the house,” Nambooze said

To stress her point tha more, Nambooze seemed to insinuate that it was not necessary to change a legislator like Latiff and therefore Ssegirinya’s stepping down would do no harm to him. “If someone comes to parliament, even if you are outspoken it will take you over three months to say something. You need to understand the technicalities of parliament, how do you raise a matter of national importance, how do you move a private member’s Bill, etc. It is a very technical job,” she stressed.

She underscored when she tried to frustrate Ssegirinya’s efforts to represent Kawempe North and made an indirect endorsement for Latiff as she tried to argue out that with his 20 year experience, he is still fit for the job. “When I was in parliament and was still trying to learn the technicalities, Latif Ssebagala came to my rescue, together with Kyanjo (Hussein), Lukwago (Erias) and Alaso (Alice), they helped me so much, due to their seniority,” she stated.

Nambooze joined NUP about in Augusy after Mukono voters heaped pressure on her to either embrace Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu as her presidential candidate or she risks being voted out of the seat she has occupied for two terms. Nambooze subdued to pressure but has since embarked on decampaign NUP candidates in favour of her long time political allies something that is gradually killing her credibility among the NUP supporters.
