The Kabale Resident District Commissioner, Mr. Darius Nandinda has threatened to apprehend any politician of the National Unity Platform party who still defiantly decks in the red berets.
Addressing local journalists this Sunday evening, Mr. Darius warns that he will be compelled to use force on some candidates who are still wearing the red berets. He stresses that the red headgear has been outlawed and designated strictly for use by the military and UPDF. “I am still seeing some politicians of the NUP party stubbornly wearing the red berets,” Darius is quoted to have said this morning. “We will not turn a blind eye on them. Starting this Monday, we will come for you and arrested you,” he adds.
Darius says those who will be arrested are to be tried in the court martial since they will have violated the laws of the army. “It won’t be business as usual for any of you and expect no mercy,” he says. “If we get you don’t expect us to take you to civilian courts. You will be tried before the court martial,” he adds.
His warning comes weeks after security forces led by the police and military stormed the headquarters of the National Unity Platform party in Kamwokya where they seized a lot of materials including the red berets. The operation was broad and saw the security storm even the downtown Kampala busy market centres to crackdown on the traders who were producing the clothing for the NUP party. Several remain incarcerated in Kitalya and Kigo prisons as the court is yet to decide their fate.
