Lawyers of the ruling National Resistance Movement party have warned the leader of the National Unity Platform party, Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert aka Bobi Wine that the intention to withdraw the petition is likely to be fatal for him and his party.
Their warning comes after the NUP leader confirmed that he is to withdraw the election petition this Monday morning. Kyagulanyi and his lawyers cite 25 reasons backing their decision. Reliable sources say that the Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny Dollo was planning to impose heavy reparations on the NUP party in terms of compensation for the Electoral Commission and the NRM party candidate Yoweri Museveni. A source further adds that the case proceedings were already predetermined from the private engagements between Dollo and Museveni where the case script and verdict were all being planned.
NRM lawyers now strain that they will file for the compensation of their time and resources they had so far injected in the proceedings. Kihiika, a lawyer of the NRM party says should Kyagulanyi go ahead snd withdraw the case then they must be ready to pay for the damages. “We have to proceed with this case because we have put in our time,” he says. “Withdrawing is a cowardly act which of course comes with costs,” he adds.
Some analysts however say the NRM lawyers are only ranting because they have realised Kyagulanyi’s decision will make them redundant as it foils their money making scheme from the case.
