In the 20th century at the peak of Adolf Hitler’s reign, the German Nazis stepped up their torture game by setting up prisons and concentration camps like Dachau, Mauthausen,
Auschwitz and others strictly for the jews who were perceived as unclean. Millions of them died at the hands of the camp leaders who subjected them to routine torture and degrading maltreatment.

Several years since the holocaust days, Uganda a landlocked nation headed by a war monger and autocrat, Gen. Yoweri Museveni who reads from the same dictatorship script as Adolf Hitler set up his own prison where the dissent are dumped.

Ekyooto journalist narrates horror in Kitalya cells

Located in central Uganda along Mityana road, Kitalya Prison has earned itself fame for housing political prisoners especially NUP supporters. Kitalya’s dominance in fact has already outshone Nalufenya torture chambers which had gained peak during the 2016 polls when the then IGP Gen. Kale Kayihura presided over a silent genocide targeting supporters of Dr. Kizza Besigye.

Inside Kitalya

The humanitarian crisis looming in Kitalya should be everybody’s concern. Reports of acute diarrhea, tuberculosis and water shortage are alarming. Prisoners are piled in less aerated rooms where they end up contracting respiratory infections. Daily undocumented deaths are reported. One of the ex convicts who spoke to us says the prison facility operates a mass grave where inmates who die of infections, torture and maltreatment are secretly buried.

The gross abuse of prisoners’ rights are alarming as well. Reports of beatings by prison wardens, theft of food stuffs and money are emerging as well.

Another ex convict tearfully narrates of how prisoners drink directly from the toilet, how they can’t even get basic medical care as well as uncontrollable defecation as a result of dysentery and diarrhea. Some are even fed on rotten food.

There’s is need for Human Rights bodies to intervene immediately to salvage the situation or else prisoners are dropping dead soon. That’s the general status of most prisons in uganda by the way! In short, a prisoner has no basic human rights in there!
