Ali Matovu, a first year student of Metropolitan university, aged 22 became the latest victim of the rifle after he was shot while he returned from a morning prayer session for the Ramadan. Ali was shot at with 4 bullets riddled through his chest. The heinous crime ensued in the wee morning hours of Tuesday. After killing the student, the trigger happy LDU officer distorted the scene and added university computer gadgets to make it appear like he had shot him for theft.
A student who declined to be put on record says Ali had just concluded morning prayers at the time he was killed. “Ali was very humble and religious. Even when the errant officer killed him, he was returning from prayers,” comments one of the students. “These LDU officers who man the university premises are addicted to drugs and alcohol. They are fond of extorting money from students and at times even threaten to inflict harm on them,” adds another.
The university administrators declined to comment on the scenario. When contacted to know if they have knowledge of the murder, the Kampala police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigire said they had the LDU officer in their custody but declined to give the details of the officer’s name and where he was being kept.
Dalaus Bukenya, the father to the deceased student broke down in tears and said he would do all it takes to see that his son gets justice. “I am going to the police to follow up. I hear they are detaining the culprit. I will follow up to see if it is true,” he says.
Gun violence by the LDU has escalated lately. At least 3 people including a journalist Robert Kagoro are among the documented people to have been killed last week. The LDU continue to kill Ugandans without any armed force coming out to condemn the impunity.
