The commander in chief of all armed forces, Gen. Yoweri Museveni says the reason he is releasing political prisoners in a phased manner is because he is sieving out those who may pose security threats to his government.
On Tuesday, Museveni through the general court martial boss Lt. Gen. Andrew Gutti freed only 17 out of the 34 NUP prisoners. Gen. Museveni says this was done this way because his government is still assessing the situation.
“We are still sorting out the misleaders from the misled but I want to assure Ugandans that those young innocent men will be released,” Museveni says.
“We only want to remain with the ring leaders, the miscalculators who wanted to start up an insurection in November last year. After sorting them out, the rest will be freed,” Museveni added.
Despite calls from civil societies and religious groups tasking him to free political prisoners unconditionally, Gen. Museveni remains hesitant to adhering.
