President Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Museveni says it is now very essential for all traffic police officers to be armed or at least partnered with armed police officers in a quest to curb gun violence and criminal activities. Museveni cites the case of the attempted murder of Gen. Katumba Wamala last week where he says the assailants had the liberty to flee when they encountered an unarmed traffic officer who could not restrain them.
“These fellows who attacked Gen. Katumba met a traffic policeman but the traffic officer was not armed and that’s how they ran away,” Museveni said in his Sunday televised address. “These people took advantage of our laxity. Now they have alerted us. The traffic police will be armed or paired with armed people,” he said.
Gen. Museveni did not however explain how the traffic police officer survived the trigger happy assailants who were indiscriminately shooting any people encountered. In fact, a one Brian Mucunguzi, a welding shop operator is still nursing a bullet wound in his right limb after being shot by the very assailants who murdered Gen. Katumba’s daughter, Brenda Nantongo and the driver, Sergeant Kayondo Haruna.
