President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa has lashed out at the Buganda kingdom authorities for maintaining the traditional Mailo land system which to him is unfair to the tenants and is outdated. Museveni who was speaking at the commemoration of the heroes day celebrations at Kololo independence grounds on Wednesday said he is disappointed by the current Buganda land system.
“That system is evil and not fair to the people who support it. How do you allow these things to happen,” Museveni said as he discredited the Mailo land policy which kicked off after the 1900 agreement. “It is not anywhere else in Uganda. Even in Ankole, we do not have that system,” he added as he instigated the need for urgent reforms.
“Land owners should be entitled to full ownership of their land like elsewhere in Uganda. In Ankole, nobody can chase you away from your land. You even fear,” Mr Museveni remarked as he discredits the Mailo land where owners incur an annual subscription fee to the Kingdom.
“In Buganda, they have so many actors with each one saying this and that and it’s all against a small person. We shall see what to propose including on the issue of absentee landlords,” he added.
However, some Buganda subjects believe this is one of the testaments that Gen. Museveni is embittered towards the kingdom in vengeance of the ballot rejection when Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert aka Bobi Wine swept the entire central region. Museveni who seems to be at the peak of his reign wants to leave defiant Buganda in tatters.
