A new report by the opposition chief whip reveals that the National covid taskforce led by Gen. Yoweri Museveni stole billions of money meant for tackling the pandemic. The opposition chief whip, John Baptist Nambeshe says their report implicates a number of government officials who laundered money meant to benefit the grassroot Ugandans. Despite the presence of the pandemic, government officials did not resign their greedy tendencies as many looked at it as an opportunity to enrich themselves.
“The UGX 80 billion meant for face masks did not materialize. Up to now people in my own district did not get face masks,” he says. ‘The Ministry of Health should not deceive the public that the AstraZeneca vaccine was procured with taxpayers money! It came as a grant from India. Therefore we want to understand what exactly took the covid relief package,” he adds.
The other agency which has been cited in the covid cash loot is the Uganda police force which inflated its budget by an excess of 14.9 billion which was shared amongst top officials like Asan Kasingye to popularize the virus on media. The Attorney General’s report revealed that even the donated relief items were shared by officials in the Office of the Prime Minister. Even money which was sent to the district taskforces did not reach their targets according to reports.
