Uganda Prisons Spokesperson Frank Baine has today come out to admit that prisons are over strained by numbers of people being admitted to serve their sentences. Baine was this afternoon addressing media in the weekly security briefing.

“Yes our prisons are full but we still have space for those who will continue to violate the orders of government. Stay home and be safe,” he said.

He also added that when one is in custody of Uganda prisons service, it is very impossible for that person to be released for medical attention be it in the country or outside. Baine was rebutting to the deaths of prominent city lawyer Bob Kasango who died in prison custody despite seeking bail multiple times to go and have decent medication for his cardiac complications. Another prominent inmate, Bernard Glaser, a German national who  last year died in Luzira prison as he prayed to have bail to go and treat his cancer in better medical facilities.

“We have no authority to allow a prisoner out of the country to go for treatment. There has never been a case where a prisoner is taken out of the country for medication. The law is clear on how prisoners should be treated when they fall sick,” Baine explained.
