Makerere University Students Guild President, Ivan Ssempijja was this morning while on his way to the Ministry of Education where he and his council were to deliver a petition.
The students were waylaid from the university main gate as they tried to hit the streets to march to the Education Ministry. They listed a series of demands which our reporter has seen in the detailed copy of the petition.
MAKERERE STUDENTS GUILD DEMANDS:
1. Reversal of Functional Fees for students in light of COVID Pandemic
2. Reversal of 12% internet tax to facilitate ease of accessibility to learning
3. Halting the 15% cumulative tuition increment policy.
4. A comprehensive plan for full reopening of University for physical learning to continue, including a clear plan for mass vaccination of students
By the time of filing this report, Ssempijja, his Vice President Awal Nouella Juach, Kato Laban and other student leaders were in custody at Central Police Station in Kampala. Police have refrained from commenting on the issue when we contacted. While at university administration, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe who represents the interests of the first lady, Janet Kataaha described the students as ‘hooligans’ who are to be dealt with ‘expeditiously’.
